The Lutheran Church of the Dirkiesdorp congregation, which is based at Themba, has become a landmark for the diaconical work at Themba: sharing God’s word in a traditional African context. The founder of the Themba Trust, Lutheran missionary Pastor Stillfried Niebuhr wanted a church in which Zulu people would feel ‘at home’. Funds to build this church were donated by a Lutheran congregation of the SELK in Germany, while members of the German-speaking South African FELSISA congregation of Luneburg, South Africa, helped with the construction. Members of the LCSA congregation of Mabola (Dirkiesdorp) also helped with building work.
